18/01/2003 Conference to be held on European approach to online gambling
Next month, the Swiss Institute of Comparative Law will hold a conference that will explore the European approach to Internet gambling in Lausanne. Scheduled for the 12th and 13th of February, the event is entitled, ?Law of Internet Gambling: From National Regulations to Global Solutions?.
According to Professor Bertil Cottier, organiser of the event and deputy director for the institute, top priority will be the discussion of Internet law and technology and the setting down of a possible international regulatory agreement that could see internet gaming thrive across the globe. The institute has invited speakers from across the spectrum to gain the widest variety of views on this controversial issue, from Clive Hawkswood of the UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport to Danish Ministry of Finance, Peter Sehestedt. Denmark supports taking a more protectionist approach towards online gambling whereas the UK has been a front runner in putting forward and following through on a free market approach.
