07/02/2001 Bracks denies that his gaming decisions had been influenced by the donation
The Premier of Victoria, Australia, Steve Bracks, made it clear this week that his gaming law decisions had not been and would not be influenced by a A$100,000 donation from a Kerry Packer-controlled company. Bracks stated that he had not known the size of the Publishing and Broadcasting Limited (PBL) donation until the information was released last week. The size and timing of the donation prompted the opposition to question the government's gaming decisions. PBL had purchased the Crown Casino in Melbourne earlier that year. After Brack?s party won the election, Rob Hulls, its hard-hitting gaming spokesman and Crown critic, was removed from that portfolio. Bracks denied that the said donations to the ALP had any influence on his government's decisions.
