27/08/2001 Former Governor to outline his appeal next month
Former Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards has been issued a deadline for the outline of his appeal on charges he extorted applicants for riverboat casino licenses. The outline must be ready by September 25.
Also convicted along with Edwards was his son Stephen, aide Andrew Martin, Baton Rouge businessman Bobby Johnson and cattleman Cecil Brown. All, aside from Brown, have remained out of prison during their appeals. Edwards faces a 10-year sentence, while his son has been sentenced to seven years. Brown was sent to a federal prison in Texas after being found guilt in a second federal extortion trial.
