Seven lucky employees of Bonas Exxon, 1725 International Boulevard in Brownsville, are looking forward to the end of their work week for more reasons than the obvious.

each received a share of the $110,038.61 retailer bonus check presented by Linda Cloud, Executive Director of the Texas Lottery Commission.

"Giving away money is one of the best parts of my job," Cloud said, "especially when part of the money goes back to the hard working retailers and their employees who have helped make the Texas Lottery one of the most successful in the country."

Cloud presented the retailer bonus check to the store's owner, George Bonas, for selling one of two jackpot-winning Lotto Texas tickets from the May 8th drawing. The other top prize ticket was sold in El Paso.

Lottery retailers are eligible to receive a one-percent bonus (maximum $500,000) for selling jackpot-winning Lotto Texas tickets.

On May 20th, Jorge Elias Albores of Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico claimed his $5.9 million cash value share of the $22 million top prize after spending $1 at Bonas Exxon for a Quick Pick Lotto Texas ticket.

In addition, 176,752 players collected prizes ranging from $3 to $1,377 from the Saturday drawing.

Mario Balboa, manager at the gas station said none of his employees knew who bought the winning top prize ticket immediately following the weekend drawing. However, he says, everyone at Bonas Exxon sure is glad Albores chose their store to buy gas and try his luck last Spring.

Selling the winning ticket has also turned out profitable for the Brownsville business in other ways. Balboa said business quickly picked up when word spread that the gas station sold a jackpot-winning ticket, and it hasn't slowed yet!

"We've seen an increase in ticket sales and a lot of new customers," Balboa said, adding "people are trying their luck more often."

In addition to selling the lucky Lotto Texas ticket, Balboa said the store has sold some lucky scratch tickets as well, one that paid a player $1,000.

More than 16,600 retailers throughout the state sell Texas Lottery instant and on-line game tickets.
