Students prefer to wager on slots rather than sports

A recent survey by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators in the United States revealed that college students prefer betting on slots than on sports.

A survey of seven college campuses showed that 15 percent of students had gambled more than once on roulette and blackjack in the past year, while 28 percent have tried slot machines or video poker. Only two percent reported that they had gambled online.

Although almost all students claim to have bet for money at least once, the figure also includes lottery tickets and casual wagers between friends. Only three to five percent displayed ?risky? behavior, according to Ken Winter, a University of Minnesota psychiatrist, who assisted in the design of the survey.

On the basis of the survey, the association has decided to recommend that college officials regard gambling addictions in the same light as drug and alcohol abuse.
